What are the minimum conditions that must exist before any biological system can begin?
This paper derives a single definitional equation for the pre-structural ground state of life — the co-present conditions that every field of life science silently presupposes but none had formalized.
Starting from an observational question — what do all clear fluids in the human body share? — the derivation reduces through biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics to identify four foundational components: water, electrolytes, DNA, and RNA. These four exist in structural coupling: water intercalates into the DNA double helix as an active participant, electrolytes neutralize the phosphate backbone to prevent collapse, and RNA rides the aqueous medium to execute.
The resulting equation:
Ψ₀ ≡ μ(w, e) ∧ λ(d, r) where d(Ψ₀)/dt = 0
defines the co-presence of medium and latent instruction at rest. The transition to life is governed by one variable: time. When t > 0, latent instructions enter active expression.
A complete falsification architecture demonstrates that invalidating any component requires overturning an independent body of confirmed science — spanning structural biochemistry, nucleic acid chemistry, the Central Dogma, the RNA World hypothesis, origin-of-life research, and thermodynamics. Six fields. Six independent methodologies. Over a century of confirmation. No single point of failure.
This equation does not model what happens. It defines what must already be.
Every domain that studies life inherits this ground state as its silent assumption. This paper makes that assumption explicit, formal, and mathematically bounded.
