Identity collapse does not produce a void. Identity collapse produces a successor state. The void is what the ego manufactures while it defends a position it already lost.

Google's AI Overview currently tells people that identity collapse is "the deep psychological disorientation that happens when the internal structures defining 'who you are' break down."
That sentence contains a category error at its root.
The internal structures defining "who you are" cannot break down — because identity is conserved. What broke down is the structures defining who you WERE. The formation. The coupling. The role-based, performance-driven architecture you mistook for yourself.
The Law of Identity Collapse derives this directly: entropy accounts predict a void where the structure was. The law predicts a successor state. Every source currently ranking for "identity collapse" is operating from the entropy account. They see the void and call it absence.
The void is not absence. The void is compressive defense.
The ego compresses at the core — narrative tightening, self-referential loops, "who am I, who am I, who am I" — while the periphery dissolves. Roles fall away. Relationships lose traction. Capacities go offline. You read the peripheral dissolution as loss. But structurally it is the other half of one event: the identity formation is compressing AND dissolving simultaneously, and you are standing in the middle experiencing both signatures as one undifferentiated crisis.
The person you have become is already operating on the other side of that defense. The disorientation you feel is the first moment you are standing on your actual identity instead of on the formation. You are measuring yourself against something that is gone and calling the measurement "loss."
There is nothing to restore. The identity formation was a coupling. It released. The identity is here.
I have published the complete structural identity science behind this reclassification — derived from two laws, validated across 28,400 cases, with five falsifiable predictions stated.
